Function & reception venue

In 1902, Ussher & Kemp designed a magnificent Queen Anne styled mansion at 13-19 Finch Street to complement other designed buildings within Finch Street. The building simply became known as ‘The Gables.’

It was built by local property developer Lawrence Alfred Birchnell and incorporates landscaped and magnificent grounds, a complex hipped-roof line, wide verandahs, leadlight windows and beautifully crafted timber detailing.

It was considered one of the most prominent houses in the Gascoigne and Waverly Estates. The historical Melbourne mansion features Australian flora and fauna in the intricate plasterwork and leadlight throughout the mansion.

The grounds were designed by William Guilfoyle, the master landscape architect of the Royal Botanical gardens and the garden retains much of its original design today. We have two prominent 120-year-old Himalayan Cedars within the grounds as well as many other significant trees. There is a gazebo, fish pond, manicured lawns, hedges and small trees. Take a walkthrough time in the gardens to experience the charm of yesteryear.

The original layout of the home consisted of a grand entrance lobby leading directly to a large billiard room which features a magnificent leadlight window at the rear. The billiard room is now used as the main function ballroom.

The mansion was a private residence until the early 1930’s and since that time has been used as a premiere wedding venue with many prominent business men and women, sportspersons and politicians celebrating their weddings, birthdays, engagements and other special events. There are many stories of past dalliances that only the record books could disclose.

The mansion is a grand old lady full of period charm waiting to be experienced by all. It has been well-maintained throughout the years with its character preserved.

Gables on Finch is a new venture providing Melbournians with an old-world environment stepping back in time into a building that survives as part of the history of Malvern. Experience old-world charm and modern cuisine in a heritage overlay setting.

The overall character of Finch Street East Malvern retains a mature Federation and inter-war area with broad tree-lined streets and for many years has been seen as quintessential Malvern.

The staff at Gables on Finch are waiting to meet you to show you our magnificent historic building for that special function that you wish to hold.
